Finish 2025 Strong: Maximize Your Impact & Tax Benefits for PASWFL

Finish 2025 Strong: Maximize Your Impact & Tax Benefits for PASWFL

As the year-end approaches, you have a powerful opportunity to support the vital work of the Parkinson's Association of SWFL (PASWFL) while strategically managing your taxes.

Review the following changes and considerations for the 2025 tax year to ensure your generosity yields the greatest benefit for you and our community:

Planning Your 2025 Gift: Key Tax Considerations
Tax Change for 2025 (and Beyond) What It Means For Your Giving
New Limit for Top Earners (Starting 2026)
The top federal income tax bracket deduction benefit is scheduled to drop from 37 cents to 35 cents per dollar in 2026. Action: If you are a high-income earner, consider accelerating a portion of your planned 2026 gift into 2025 to secure the higher potential tax savings this year.

SALT Deduction Limit Increases
The limit for the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction for itemizers increases from $\$10,000$ to $\$40,000$ in 2025. Action: This substantial increase offers greater relief for those in high-tax states and could simplify your overall tax strategy, allowing for more flexibility in your charitable planning.

Higher Standard Deduction Made Permanent
The standard deduction remains high, indexed for inflation (e.g., $\$15,750$ for single filers and $\$31,500$ for married filing jointly in 2025). Action: If you typically don't itemize, you can still gain significant tax benefits by giving appreciated non-cash assets (like stock or real estate) or making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA (if 70½ or older).

Deduction Limit for Cash Gifts Permanent
You can continue to deduct cash gifts up to $60\%$ of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Action: Consider a balanced gift strategy combining cash with non-cash assets (like stock) to maximize both your tax benefit and your direct support for our local Parkinson’s programs.

New Itemizer Floor (Starting 2026)
Beginning in 2026, those who itemize will need to give at least $0.5\%$ of their AGI to claim a charitable deduction. Action: If you are close to this threshold, plan to maximize your charitable giving in 2025 before this new floor takes effect.

Great Ways to Give Before December 31st
1. Make a Gift From Your IRA (QCD)
If you are 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $\$108,000$ directly from your IRA to PASWFL.
  • Major Benefit: This transfer is tax-free and counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
  • Deadline Note: Your IRA administrator must complete the transfer by December 31st.

2. Donate Appreciated Stock or Securities
By donating stock or mutual funds you have owned for more than one year that have increased in value, you achieve a double benefit:
  • You receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock.
  • You eliminate capital gains tax on the appreciation.
  • Deadline Note: For electronic transfers, the gift date is the day the stock officially enters the PASWFL account.

3. Recommend a Grant From Your Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
If you have an existing DAF, you can recommend a grant to PASWFL.
  • Benefit: You fulfill your charitable goal and make a tangible difference in the lives of local Parkinson's patients and caregivers before the year ends.
  • Tax Note: The income tax deduction was received when you funded the DAF; the grant itself is a distribution.

4. Direct Cash Gift (Check or Online)
Your immediate support helps fund our local classes, support groups, and resources right away.
  • Deadline Note (Mailed Check): To qualify for a 2025 deduction, your envelope must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before December 31st.

5. Establish a Charitable Gift Annuity
Charitable gift annuity rates are currently favorable. By creating a gift annuity, you support PASWFL and receive fixed income payments for life (which may be partially tax-free).
  • Action: Start the process early to ensure completion by year-end. Contact us for the current rates.
