Movement Classes

Growing evidence shows that vigorous exercise may have a neuroprotective effect for people with PD. Our group movement classes offer a flexible and functional exercise approach that target multiple symptoms and allow for adaptation for disease severity. These classes specifically target four skills shown by research to interfere with mobility in people with PD: antigravity extension, weight shifting, axial mobility, and transitional movements. Movement is a key element to living well with PD.
While there is no charge to participate there are significants costs to offer our programs and services.
Participants are required to complete a
membership application and participation waiver before participating in online and in person programs. Click below to complete the required application online.

Gentle Movement on Zoom
Monday-Friday 1:00 - 1:45 pm

While accommodating limited mobility, this class is a seated exercise program with an emphasis on stretching, building endurance, and some strengthening.
While accommodating limitations because of pain or low endurance, this class will challenge participants to increase their activity level with the expectation of feeling and functioning better.

NEW CLASS BEGINS JUNE 30! Pilates for PD
Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 pm

Many people with Parkinson’s turn to Pilates because it’s a low-impact activity with big-impact results. Because Pilates focuses on increasing core strength and improving flexibility and balance, it can be particularly helpful in countering the effects of PD.

The simple, controlled exercises help you correct your spinal and pelvic alignment, while forcing you to concentrate on movements that protract and retract the muscles. This strengthens the way the brain communicates with your body, thus teaching you how to have better control over the way your body moves.

It’s non-aerobic, so you won’t get your heartbeat racing and you won’t break a sweat. That makes it a great choice if you’re worried about fatigue or stamina since most of the workout is performed sitting or on the floor.

Why online classes?

In response to COVID-19 safety concerns and to protect the health of our members, we have rallied our resources to put together online classes, support groups and educational talks to help you live well with PD safely from home.
We will return to in person classes again as soon as it is safe to do so, while continuing to offer online classes for those who would like to maintain social distancing.
