If You found this page, you may have recently received a diagnosis of Parkinson Disease. Because there is no definitive test for Parkinson, your diagnosis was probably made by either your general practitioner or a neurologist who you went to see because you were experiencing unusual symptoms that were worsening. You may have suspected your symptoms were a sign of Parkinson, but receiving an actual diagnosis can still feel devastating and leave you wondering what to do next.

Reach out for support

The first step to living well with PD is reaching out for support.  The Parkinson Association of SWFL is here to help you navigate through the uncertainty and connect you with the information and resources you will need to help you live well with PD.
Please reach out to us by calling our office at 239-417-3465 to schedule a meeting with our program director. There is no charge for our services and we have helped thousands of people who were in the same position you find yourself in today.

How can you help?

We know you have a lot of questions and we are here to help answer them. Having those questions answered can be a huge relief and make your next steps to living well with PD that much easier. We are here as a resource to connect you to movement disorder specialists in the area and inform you of new treatments and studies that are available to you. We currently have more than 25 classes and groups available each week that provide physical and emotional support you, your care partner and your loved ones.

Each week we provide our members with a variety of classes and educational programs that include:
  • 12 movement classes
  • 8 support groups
  • 5 speech classes
  • 3 social wellness classes
  • A variety of educational talks from leading Parkinson researchers and medical experts.
There is no charge to participate or to become a member.
Our staff can help you:
  • Find answers to your questions and inform you about what you can expect with your diagnosis.
  • Learn about our PD movement, speech and wellness classes available to you and your care partner.
  • Find movement specialists and providers.
  • By providing support during crisis.
  • Connect you with opportunities to meet other Parkinsonian's for inspiration and support.
  • Keep you up to date with information on best practices, new studies and treatments.
  • Help you establish and exercise program.

It is not unusual for someone who is diagnosed with Parkinson Disease to wait until there is a crisis to reach out to us for support. Studies show that early interventions prolong your ability to stay active and delay the onset of some progressive symptoms like behavioral complications and motor fluctuations. See a movement disorder specialist. While your GP or neurologist may have made the initial diagnosis, a movement specialist will be up to date on new treatments and therapies. We can help refer you to specialists in the area.

Stay active. Make activities like walking, swimming and biking part of your lifestyle. The more active you are now, the more likely you are to stay that way longer. We have movement classes every weekday that can help you keep moving.

​Stay connected and continue to pursue those things that interest you like hobbies, friends, travel and clubs. We have social events and groups where you can meet others with PD and find support.

What is Parkinson Disease?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common degenerative neurological disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. It is estimated that PD affects 1 percent of the population over the age of 60.
