Brain Activity Patterns May Help Predict Future Parkinson’s Disease Progression Olde Dubbelink, Kim T.E., et al. “Magnetoencephalography-Based Prediction of Longitudinal Symptom Progression in Parkinson’s Disease.” npj Parkinson’s Disease, January 2025. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41531-025-01240-4
One of the biggest questions facing people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease is how quickly symptoms will progress. A 2025 study published in npj Parkinson’s Disease suggests that brain activity patterns measured through magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help researchers predict future disease progression.
MEG is a noninvasive imaging technology that records magnetic signals produced by brain activity. Researchers studied individuals with Parkinson’s disease and analyzed their brain activity patterns alongside clinical outcomes over time.
The study found that specific neural signatures were associated with future changes in symptoms and disease progression. By examining these patterns, researchers were able to identify markers that may help predict which individuals are more likely to experience faster progression.
The findings are important because Parkinson’s disease affects each person differently. Some individuals experience relatively slow progression over many years, while others develop symptoms more rapidly. Better prediction tools could help physicians personalize treatment plans, identify candidates for clinical trials and provide patients with more accurate information about their condition.
Although the technology is not yet ready for routine clinical use, the research represents an important step toward precision medicine in Parkinson’s disease. Future studies may help determine whether brain-based biomarkers can guide treatment decisions and improve outcomes for people living with Parkinson’s.
