What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, balance, and coordination. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain, particularly those in the substantia nigra, stop producing enough dopamine—a crucial neurotransmitter that helps regulate movement. While the exact cause of Parkinson’s remains unknown, researchers believe it results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Here are some possible causes of PD:

Possible Causes of Parkinson’s Disease
  1. Genetic Factors
While most cases of Parkinson’s are not directly inherited, some genetic mutations have been linked to an increased risk of developing the disease. If you have a family history of Parkinson’s, your risk may be slightly higher, but other factors play a significant role as well.
  2. Environmental Triggers
Exposure to certain toxins, such as pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals, has been studied as a potential risk factor for PD. Additionally, head injuries and long-term exposure to pollutants may contribute to the development of the disease.
  3. Aging
Parkinson’s primarily affects older adults, with most people diagnosed after age 60. As we age, dopamine-producing neurons naturally decline, which may contribute to an increased risk of PD.
  4. Lifestyle and Other Factors
While not direct causes, factors such as diet, physical activity, and overall health may influence disease progression. Research is ongoing to understand how gut health and inflammation might also play a role in Parkinson’s.
